Catalog description

An exploration of the themes of power, justice, and identity as they interact with sleep quality and health. We will first examine biological, medical, and social dimensions of sleep and circadian rhythms. Then we will explore evidence that disadvantaged economic and social status contributes to sleep deficiencies, which in turn contribute to worse health outcomes. Students will define and address specific causes of sleep disruption that are amplified by social and economic factors, and will develop programs for further research, public education, and actionable remedies for practices and policies that contribute to poor sleep hygiene.
