An introduction to Indigenous cultural diversity and change in North America through archaeology. Students examine topics including the timing and route of first human colonization, the nature and variation of hunter-gatherer societies, the origins and consequences of agriculture, and the roots of social inequality through archaeological evidence. Students develop a comparative and evidence-based framework to gain an understanding of the great antiquity and varied historical trajectories of Native peoples in North America and engage with Indigenous perspectives on archaeology.
