- Modern Latin American Art: Politics of Authenticity

Catalog description

An exploration of the production of art in Latin America from the nineteenth-century movements for independence through the present day. This course will define Latin America broadly and study a variety of Latin American visual culture manifestations including Caribbean visual cultures as well as Chicanx visual production in the United States. Students will question the norms associated with the Western canon and pay attention to how narratives of cultural identity, place-making, modernity, and globalism inform modern and contemporary art in diverse Latin American contexts.
