Catalog description

Three credit -hours. Three hours of lecture per week. This course covers elementary discrete mathematics for computer science and engineering. It emphasizes mathematical definitions as well as applicable methods. Topics include formal logic notation; sets, functions, relations; elem entary graph theory; number theory; growth of functions; permutations and combinations, counting principles; discrete probability. Further selected topics may also be covered, such as state machines and invariants. Students will develop quantitative reason ing skills and use computer tools necessary to analyze problems arising from telecommunications such as encryption for data privacy and secure communication.
