MEDICAL NUTRITIONAL THERAPY I

This course, first of two courses, cover the use of nutrition as a component of treating disease. Relevant biochemistry and physiology are integrated into a medical nutrition therapy plan. Courses are organized by body organ system and disease. Topics cove red from a medical nutritional perspective include acid base Course Description and fluid and electrolyte balance; renal, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, hepatic, pancreatic diseases. Special nutrition therapies are discussed. The course also introduces students to: nutritional genomics, food-drug interactions, enteral and parenteral support, and medical terminology. Material is illustrated by case studies. Objectives: 1. Discuss the Nutritional Assessment Steps as part of the Nutritional Care Process for Individuals (A.D.I.M.E.). 2. Discuss the Nutritional Diagnosis and Intervention Steps as part of the Nutritional Care Process for Individuals (A.D.I.M.E.). 3. Analyze the Nutrition in the Life Cycle. 4. Practice and Perform the A.D.I.M.E. using Case Studi es.
