INDUCTION TO CLINICAL DENTISTRY

This course introduces concepts that are essential for the eventual entry of the developing general dentist into the UAGM SDM Clinics. The course also presents the student with the required components and expectations for the development of their individualized student portfolio which documents representative impressions of their developmental experiences and self -reflections th roughout the DMD Program. The learning experiences in this course include introduction to essential protocols for compliance with UAGM institutional safety requirements, essential concepts for patient care such as rational use of biosafety procedures and the dynamic process of informed consent. Additional knowledge, skills and training that are also essential for successful start of the clinical component of the SDM’s curriculum, as well as for a lifetime of practicing dentistry are introduced in this course and include: basic life support/cardiopulmonary resuscitation theoretical content and certification, management of patient information and SDM record keeping, four-handed dentistry, principles of dental ergonomics, and adequate handling of dental instru ments and dental materials that are commonly used in initial and recall patient examinations.
