Catalog description

This course on Substance -Related and Addictive Disorders Counseling provides a critical examination of what constitutes a substance -related and addictive disorder, and the difference between substance use and substance induced disorders as coded in the DSM-5-TR. Puerto Rico has a high incidence of alcohol/drug use and abuse. Children, teenagers, and young adults are being initiated at an earlier age in the use of alcohol and drugs. Puerto Rico is in great need for professionals dedicated in this field atten ding to specific needs in education, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. This course will focus on providing the basic concepts of addictive behaviors resulting from the use and abuse of alcohol and drug use. Will explain how the brain and nervous s ystem is affected and will provide basic pharmacological information. The different theoretical psychological models will be studied and how they each explain addictive behavior. Psychotherapy programs and intervention procedures and psychological treatment models available for the treatment of these disorders will be critically reviewed and special emphasis will be placed on the empirically validated models.
