Three hours of lecture/laboratory per week. Survey of the basic concepts of computer design. Information representation, instruction sets, addressing modes, arithmetic/logic units, floating point units, control units, microprogramming, hardwired control, memory hierarchy, caches, associative memory, memory management, input- output, direct memory access (DMA), interrupts, system organization, complex instruction set computer (CISC), reduced instruction set computer (RISC), super scalar machines, special purp ose machines, and multiprocessing. Additionally, students will have ample opportunity to explore the literature in this field to enhance their technical competencies and keep abreast of the most recent developments in computers.
