CHEM 351
ORGANIC CHEMISTRY I
Sistema Universitario Ana G. Mendez · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
The emphasis is directed to the study of carbon and hydrogen compounds and their derivatives with other heteroatoms such as: halogens, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus and some metals. The nomenclature and physical properties of the different families of organic compounds. The reactions of alkanes, alkenes, cycloalkanes, alkynes and dienes. Skills are developed in the study of addition reactions, mechanisms and synthesis of double and triple bond compounds. Technological competence is developed with the use of spectroscopic methods for the analysis and identification of molecular structures. The laboratory emphasizes the use of purification, separation and characterization techniques for organic compounds, using their physical properties. The student wil l be trained in the correct use of different equipment and glassware. The course consists of 45 hours of lectures and 45 hours of laboratory.
