This course integrates the basic concepts of biotechnology and its practical application in the field of microbiology. Students develop skills in the laboratory that can be applied to scientific research, product development and manufacturing, and quality control. In addition, they are taught about the applications that make up the use of microorganisms in clinical and basic science, industry, agriculture and the environment. Microbial biotechnology techniques are presented such as culture of bacteria and y east, DNA analysis by restriction enzymes, DNA cloning, chromatography, electrophoresis, protein separation and purification, PCR and real -time PCR and bioinformatics, among others. The ethical and public perception of biotechnology, and relevant scientifi c situations, are discussed. The course consists of 30 hours of lectures and 30 hours of laboratory. BIOL 400 INTERNSHIP IN MICROBIOLOGY 1 CREDIT According to the interests of each student, this course offers them the opportunity to put into practice the processes involved in the operation of a laboratory in the industry or develop a research project in a research laboratory. For students doing their internship in industry, emphasis is placed on the execution of laboratory procedures that involve the taking and processing of samples, isolation and identification of microbial strains, good documentation practices, and analysis of results. In this course gives students the opportunity to improve their intellectual and technical skills. Students will be required to write a report of what they have learned and make an oral presentation to the Applied Microbiology program. This course will take place during one semester with a total of one hundred and sixty (160) hours of practice.
