Catalog description

This course offers a broad study of the field of microbiology to students of natural sciences. The student will have the opportunity to study the relationship, interactions and contributions of microorganisms to human beings and planet Earth. The course in troduces general knowledge on six main topics in microbiology such as: structure and physiology of microorganisms (cellular structures, metabolism and growth); microbial genetics, microbial diversity (prokaryotes, eukaryotes, viruses), microbial ecology, c linical microbiology (immunity, pathogenicity, epidemiology, disease, and microbial control), and applied microbiology. In addition, the most relevant aspects in the history of microbiology and its impact as a discipline in modern life are summarized. Students will be able to participate in active learning activitie s and class discussions to develop critical thinking and deepen their understanding of the microbial world and apply their knowledge to various concepts in microbiology. The laboratory component provides the student with practical skills related to general safety and biosafety, aseptic technique, handling of instruments and equipment; the isolation, culture and control of microorganisms; count of microorganisms, microscopy techniques and stains and observation of biochemical activities. The course includes activities aimed at developing research and bioethics skills where the student will be able to responsibly apply the necessary scientific methodology to seek solutions to problems and challenges related to mi crobiology. Also, emphasis is placed on the development of appropriate communication skills for the effective dissemination of knowledge and skills related to teamwork. The course consists of 45 hours of lectures and 45 hours of laboratory.
