Catalog description

To work in public health in the U.S. it is crucial to understand not only the American health care system and the vast collection of health care policies that exist in the U.S., but also the populations they serve. Focusing on these populations includes attention not only to their specific needs but the various social forces beyond health care systems and policies which impact public health. Students in this course will learn how the American health care system is organized, delivered, and financed. They will learn about the various health care policies that are currently on the books at the federal, state, and local levels, including the policy-making process itself, the content of current policies, and the impact of these policies. And they will examine various populations in need and how their health might be best promoted.
