Public Health is the science of promoting health through evidence-based social policy, community organization and support, and informed individual choice. Introduction to Public Health is a survey course that provides an overview of the field, focusing on the ecological nature of public health, macro analysis of the ways that social systems affect population health, mezzo-level group analysis of particular populations and their health experiences and needs, and micro approaches to individual decision making and the social factors that shape individual health decisions. Historical and current public health events and campaigns will be used as case studies throughout to enable students to engage in critical thinking, application of concepts, and to build their own public health campaign.
