History and Philosophy of Dance II

Catalog description
This course is a continued study of the development of concert dance, acknowledging the Western classical roots and emphasizing important cultural trends & individual artists that continuously redefine and expand the expressive, technical and presentational capacities of the art form. Philosophical theories of dance as a performing art and the writings of contemporary critics are examined and discussed. Emphasis is placed on the development of an individual aesthetic base, developed through exposure to a wide variety of recorded resources. Independent reading, writing and research assignments develop comprehension, technology and oral/written communication skills.
