School-Age Learning/Developmen
Shasta College · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course examines the cognitive, physical, and social-emotional development of school-age children (ages 5-12), with a focus on supporting learners in PK-3 grade classrooms and after-school programs. Grounded in major developmental theories and culturally responsive practices, students will apply knowledge of child development to design inclusive, age-appropriate learning experiences, practice effective observation and guidance strategies, and demonstrate competence in creating equitable environments that support diverse learners. Emphasis is placed on understanding behavior, fostering positive peer relationships, partnering with families, and using observation and assessment to inform teaching. Through hands-on activities, analysis, and reflection, students will build the professional skills necessary to support school-age children across both classroom and expanded learning environments. This course may be taught in a distance education format.
