Japanese Masculinities

Catalog description

This course will critically interrogate the notion of “manhood,” “masculinity,” “femininity,” and “gender” in Japan between the 700s-2020s. Starting from the assertion that gender is socially constructed and variable over time, we will seek to explore the way that masculinity and femininity developed and changed in the cultural context of Japan’s social, philosophical, political, and economic traditions. No knowledge of Japanese language required.
