The Second Vatican Council was the most important event of the XX century in the life of the Catholic Church. Its decisions and documents have had a great impact on what the Catholic Church is today. Still, in our time, there are disputes about the correct interpretation of Vatican II. This event did not happen ex nihilo. There were many different currents within the Church that laid the foundation for the future Council convoked by the Pope John XXIII. This course will examine the historical, theological, and social contexts that shaped the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). We will explore the “remote” and “immediate” phases of preparation that led to this pivotal event in modern Church history.
