The Spanish Civil War (1936-39), initiated by the insurrection led by General Francisco Franco (whose subsequent fascist regime lasted until his death in 1975), put an end to the Second Spanish Republic founded in 1931. This course centers on a selection of novels and films that reconstruct, evoke and explore this traumatic event and its consequences in different ways. We will study the various ideologies and conflicts during the period of the Republic that resulted in the war as well as the construction of a new, fascist Spain. Issues of trauma, exile, memory, identity and gender will be studied.
