Gender & Sexualities in Social Work

Catalog description

This course will focus on human sexualities through the lens of social work, including integrating human sexualities topics into social work practice. Students will examine current theories, research, and evidence-based practices in addressing human sexuality issues across the lifespan. The course will explore historical, political, and cultural contexts of human sexuality, incorporating a trauma-informed and human rights perspective on sexualities and nested in Critical Race Theory, reproductive justice, and intersectionality. This course is designed to provide students with greater awareness of the diversity in sexual values, attitudes, and behavioral expressions in a respectful manner. Students are expected to increase knowledge and skills in assessing and responding to issues related to human sexualities that are often present in many areas of social work and social work practice.
