Catalog description

A survey of the sociology of race and ethnicity, focusing on the United States. The course examines the social construction of race and ethnicity in the U.S., social and personal racial/ethnic identifications (and how they intersect with others), sociological theories concerning the creation and maintenance of racial and ethnic categories within U.S., power relations and policies (such as immigration, drugs, criminal justice, and welfare), racial and ethnic social inequalities within a number of U.S. institutions (such as education and medicine), and close up foci on specific racial/ethnic groups in the U.S.
