Race & Ethnos Antiquity to Today

Catalog description

This course explores the notions of “race” and ethnicity, or, in Greek, “ethnos,” in the ancient world. This course seeks to understand how ancient peoples thought about skin color, “categories” of human beings based on appearance, and modes of ancient differentiation and discrimination. By beginning and ending the course with a focus on more contemporary notions of race/ethnicity in the West, this course seeks not only to understand the ancient world in isolation but also the relationships between ancient and contemporary notions of race.
