This class explores philosophical issues around artificial intelligence (AI). We’ll start by examining features of human minds – intelligence, consciousness, and agency – and ask what they mean and whether it’s possible for a machine to have them, too. Then we’ll ask questions about how we should relate to advanced artificial intelligence. Could an AI be a moral subject, whose wellbeing matters? Should we treat advanced AI agents as peers, even friends? How can we ensure that advanced AI agents act ethically towards us? Finally, we’ll discuss potential dangers of advanced artificial intelligence, from AI-takeover and human extinction to threats to democracy, work, and uncontrollable disinformation.
