Clinical Ethics at the Bedside

Catalog description

The goal of this course is to cultivate a solid background in the ethics of clinical medicine. We will discuss various moral issues raised by contemporary clinical practice, but in a way that is informed by students' actual experiences in the clinical setting. Specifically, each student will spend time shadowing healthcare professionals as they care for patients and communicate with their loved ones. Topics to be covered include: surrogate decision-making for incapacitated adults, forced treatment in the context of psychiatric disorders, conflicts in labor and delivery, and medical decision-making for children.
