Iran is perhaps one of the most misunderstood countries in our contemporary world. This course serves as an introduction to the history of Iran from the early modern period to the present, placing a special emphasis on Iran's connection to major regional and international trends. The covered topics include Iran's experience of modernity and imperialism, intellectual and religious trends, factionalism, national identity and nationalism, women and gender, the politics of oil, and the genesis of revolutions and social movements. The readings, complemented by literary texts, primary sources, slides, and films, empower students to better understand and analyze the nuances of current social, political, and cultural movements in Iran.
