This course explores the long history of American deportation. It will address campaigns of expulsion and forced migration as government-sponsored programs and as local practices; the debates and conflicts that they generated; and the ways targeted groups claimed a place in U.S. society. Topics include the Alien and Sedition Acts, Black colonization, Indian Removal, Mormon expulsions, Chinese exclusion-era pogroms, Red Scare deportations, “Operation Wetback” against Mexicans and Mexican-Americans, and 21st-century deportation campaigns.
