This is a survey of Native American history, spanning the period before colonization to U.S. Indian removal in the 1830s. The course’s major themes include pre-Columbian North America; the dynamics of initial encounters with Europeans and Africans and sustained intercultural contact; the multifaceted changes wrought by colonization and Native peoples’ creative adaptations to them; and Native experiences of U.S. settlement and government policies, including “civilization” and removal.
