Film & History in Europe

Catalog description

This course will examine the complicated relationship between film and history in twentieth-century Europe. Students will view, discuss, and critique some of the most celebrated and influential films from Western and Eastern Europe. Students will read movie reviews, works of film theory, as well as interviews with notable filmmakers like Ingmar Bergman, Agnès Varda, François Truffaut, and Federico Fellini. One principal objective of the course will be to investigate how films reflect (or do not reflect) the intellectual, cultural, and political concerns of the era in which they were produced.
