Leo Tolstoy’s novel Anna Karenina is an epic tale of passion, intrigue, betrayal, and redemption. It is also a penetrating and encyclopedic portrayal of Russian life in the period following the Great Reforms of the 1860s. This course uses Anna Karenina as the starting point for a multifaceted investigation of nineteenth century Russian history and culture.
