This course attends to the civilizations in the Middle East and North Africa that were influenced by Islam and explores the formation of Islamic empires from the 7th century emergence of Islam to the early modern period. Some of the topic covered include the transformation of a Muslim community in the Arabian Peninsula to an Islamic political entity in the 7th century, scientific renaissance in the Islamic world, development of Islamic law and legal systems, religious and cultural diversity in the Middle East, and early colonialism in the region. The course aims to acquaint students with the shared features distinguishing Islamic societies and the diverse traditions, cultures, and peoples that have enriched the Islamic world.
