Literary Life after Academia

Catalog description

This course serves as an introduction to a range of literary-associated professional and artistic possibilities after academia. We will learn about book publishing (from the perspective of big, commercial companies to smaller, independent publishers), literary magazines, and myriad forms of digital publishing (including audio books). We will also learn about the broader range of organizations that support literary culture such as The Blacklist, PEN, the National Book Foundation, and others. We will talk about what it means to be a literary citizen and how we can best advocate for each other in literary culture. Throughout the semester, we will hear from a wide variety of guest speakers about the kind of work they do in the literary world and the trajectory of their careers.
