This course will examine the origins and meteoric rise of Gothic literature, especially the Gothic novel, in Britain to understand its fascination then and now, its relationship to its culture and to ours, and its function as art and as edification. Authors may include Horace Walpole, Ann Radcliffe, and Jane Austen.
