The City - American Literature

Catalog description

This course will examine the urban experience as represented in American literature, either by highlighting the literature about/of a specific city or by looking at American urban literature more broadly through a variety of cities. Readings will highlight the city as a theoretical concept and as an influential force in American thinking and culture; they will also consider the impact of immigration, war, disease, social and political change, race, and class. Readings may range from the seventeenth century to the present day, depending on the specific focus of the course.
