Celtic Revivals to the Present begins with the literary and historical context of the Celtic Revival in Ireland, then explores the way these ideas of theatre and revolution evolved over the past one hundred and fifty years. Uncovering voices of women, people of color, and queer writers, this class invites students to consider an Irish story that reflects those who did not get credit for their work alongside readings of canonical texts. The course investigates nationalisms, hybridity, colonialism, gender, feminism, authorship, class, folklore, the occult, and anticolonial performance and reveals the influence of South Asian, Caribbean, Japanese, and West African writers on the literary and cultural movements that created contested ideas of Irishness.
