Catalog description

This course is the second in a two-course sequence in teaching math and focuses on the knowledge and skills needed to teach math concepts and strategies to upper elementary school students – grades 3-6, with a heavy focus on fractions. Through hands-on explorations and readings, candidates will learn how to unpack national and state math standards, use literacy skills to support and deepen math understanding, and integrate the mathematical practices for using and thinking with math. A focus will be on connecting math to everyday life and children’s culture, community, and experiences. Throughout the course, candidates will learn how to meet the needs of all children while exploring how to integrate culturally relevant practices into math discussions, environment, lessons, and assessments.
