Catalog description

The development of literacy knowledge and skills prepares children for critical thinking and learning in school and throughout their life. Foundational literacy goes far beyond learning to read and write. It supports problem-solving, creativity, and an ability to think beyond one’s own experience. This course provides the building blocks for literacy including, but not limited to, concepts in phonics, phonemic awareness, letter recognition, comprehension, and fluency. The value of literacy rich environments, from the home to the classroom, are explored with respect for the diversity of family experience with reading and writing lives. The content of this course is aligned with the national and state professional associations we follow for teacher education: (1) InTASC, (2) NJSLS, (3) IRA, and (4) CAEP.
