Catalog description

This course provides an introduction to the design, implementation, and management of both relational and NoSQL databases. Students will explore core database theory concepts, including data models, relational algebra, and normalization techniques, alongside practical skills for working with widely-used Database Management Systems (DBMS) like MySQL. Key topics include database design, entity-relationship (ER) modeling, and the use of Structured Query Language (SQL). Additionally, the course delves into NoSQL databases, emphasizing their differences from traditional relational databases and their role in managing big data and high-velocity, unstructured data. Students will explore various NoSQL data models, including document-based, key-value, column-family, and graph databases, with hands-on experience using Neo4j, a popular graph database. By the end of the course, students will be equipped to design and implement database systems, with web and cloud-based applications, write efficient queries, and understand essential concepts in database performance and optimization.
