Catalog description

This course focuses on the fundamental biology of cancer including its molecular basis, phenotypic characteristics, genetics, pathogenesis, treatment and epidemiology. Major topics to be discussed are growth factors and mitogenic pathways, oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, apoptosis, cell cycle regulation, immortalization, maintenance and repair of the genome, multi-step tumorigenesis, heterotypic cellular interactions, angiogenesis, invasion, metastasis, immune-oncology, and treatment. Students will learn the biology of cancer as it develops by mutation to the wild-type cellular and molecular processes of the cell.
