This course examines the political, social, and economic transformations of India from the final decade of colonial rule to the present. Beginning with the crises of the 1940s and the movement for independence, students explore Partition, nation-building, democratic institutions, economic reforms, and the challenges of diversity, inequality, and globalization. Through primary sources and historical scholarship, the course highlights key debates on secularism, identity, development, and India’s role in the world.
