Chinese Calligraphy and Culture

Catalog description

This course introduces the distinctive features of the Chinese writing system and major calligraphic scripts—Seal, Clerical, Regular, Running, and Cursive—through readings, discussions, presentations, hands-on practice, and project work. Students will examine the historical development of Chinese writing, the evolution of calligraphy across key periods of Chinese civilization, and its significance in contemporary society, while engaging in calligraphy practice with an emphasis on Regular Script. By exploring the rhythm, structure, and visual aesthetics of brush and ink, students will develop an appreciation of Chinese calligraphy as both an art form and a cultural tradition, gain a deeper understanding of the Chinese writing system, and cultivate an interest in Chinese language, culture, and history. No prior background in Chinese is required.
