Catalog description

This second part of Professional Arabic for Media and Diplomacy is an intensive language and practicum course whose aim is to train students in the classroom and in the diplomatic field related to the Middle East and North Africa. Students will continue to deepen their competences in translation, reporting, and use of digital tools for Diplomacy, and will be required to harness these in the field work through organized visits to the UN in New York, and through close work with Middle East Diplomatic missions based in the US or the Middle East. Students who are preparing for a diplomatic career related to the region will have a chance to practice what they have learned in the classroom, and through part I and be able to network with important actors in the diplomatic scene of the Middle East. The practicum component includes, for example, interviews and workshops with officials from several embassies and foreign ministries in exactly the mode of formal Arabic language they will need for their roles as diplomats, through customized curricula and the use of relevant topics that most concern those involved in diplomacy in the region especially the role of US policy and the quality of Diplomatic ties between the US and countries in the Middle East and North Africa. This second part of the course centers around 5 document based Modules: 1. Diplomatic Relations between the US, Middle East and North Africa 2. The United Nations: History, Structure, Functions 3. United Nations on Human Rights 4. Practicum, Human Rights/ Middle East Mission in US/ Human Rights Reports 5. United Nations programs on Sustainable Development.
