Catalog description

This course presents an overview of the discipline of community and public health as a social and behavioral science. Students will develop an understanding of core concepts and terminology in public health; the history and functions of public health professions and organizations; and the study, prevention, and control of disease in the community. Emphasis will be placed on the theoretical frameworks and research methods (epidemiology, biostatistics, and social/behavioral models) used to analyze health patterns and determinants of health at the population level. Topics include the social determinants of health; strategies for reducing health disparities among diverse populations; community organizing and health promotion programming; school health promotion models; environmental health and safety; global and local health challenges; and the structure of the U.S. healthcare delivery system. Students will also explore public health advocacy, policy, and leadership strategies as preliminary skills to serve as effective advocates for community and public health.
