Introduction to Public Health

This course provides an overview of the philosophy, history, organization, and functions of public health at the global, national, state, and community levels. Students will be introduced to the core concepts, tools, and activities of public health practice, including the prevention and control of disease, the impact of social determinants of health, and strategies for addressing health disparities. Key topics include community organizing, health promotion programming, school and environmental health, and the structure of the U.S. healthcare delivery system. Emphasis is placed on developing foundational knowledge and skills to identify and assess contemporary public health issues, evaluate ethical challenges, and serve as effective advocates for healthier communities.
