Catalog description

This course provides students with foundational knowledge and practical skills in reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications used in public works and building construction. Designed for emerging professionals in construction inspection, code enforcement, and construction management, the course emphasizes how to navigate plan sets and technical documents from conceptual design through final construction. Students will gain fluency in identifying plan types, symbols, and abbreviations, and learn how to apply construction codes, specifications, and cost-estimating practices in real-world scenarios. Topics include the Uniform Drawing System, Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) divisions, architectural and engineering scales, construction math, and blueprint interpretation for structural, civil, and MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) systems. The course also incorporates quantity takeoffs, cost estimating using current data, and exposure to industry-standard software tools. Site visits and guest lectures enhance learning through real-world application. By the end of the course, students will be able to evaluate construction plans and determine compliance with building codes, and accurately estimate material quantities and costs.
