Catalog description

This introductory engineering graphics course is fundamental for mechanical engineering and civil engineering majors, as it provides the core visualization and technical drawing skills needed to interpret and create engineering designs. The objective of this course is not to train students as CAD drafters, but rather to teach visual communication as a foundational engineering skill, to build fluency in the basic language of engineering graphics, and to develop essential competency with modern engineering graphics software. The course covers the principles of technical drafting and the use of engineering drawings to communicate design intent. It introduces students to the engineering design process and develops proficiency in orthographic projection, dimensioning and tolerancing practices, and freehand sketching. Hands-on use of computer-aided design (CAD) software is a central and required part of the course. CAD is used extensively throughout the course to create 2-D drawings and 3-D solid models that support all major course topics.
