Catalog description

Preservice teachers gain with a comprehensive understanding of how children learn to read and write, grounded in evidence-based instructional practices. This course examines the cognitive, linguistic, and developmental processes that support literacy acquisition, including phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing. Through readings, modeling, rehearsing, and analysis of authentic student data, candidates learn to design, deliver, and evaluate effective instruction that meets the diverse needs of early and elementary readers. Emphasis is placed on integrating theory and research with practical classroom application to build confident, informed, and reflective literacy teachers.
