Politics of The Middle East.

Catalog description

Students examine contemporary patterns of government and politics in the Middle East. The course encompasses most of the countries of the Middle East, including Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the Gulf States, Iraq, Iran, and Turkey. North Africa may also be included. Students study the historical legacies and continuing impact of colonialism and nationalism, political Islam and secularism, challenges of authority, and legitimacy. Students also explore the ways in which the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and regime change in the region impact U.S. foreign policy and the region more broadly. Prerequisite: 6 hours of POLS.
