Students examine the history of militarism and warfare in Germany, from the rise of the Prussian state in the eighteenth century through the present. Topics may include the relationship between warfare and the development of German politics, society, and culture. Major historical figures include Frederick the Great, Clausewitz, Otto von Bismarck, and Adolf Hitler. Students examine how contemporary, pacifist German politics emerged from two centuries of warfare. Course Equivalents: HIST 3359 .
