Catalog description

Students work with critical care physicians who care for patients with the most serious disease processes in an intensive care setting (but is not otherwise designated as “medical intensive care,” “cardiac intensive care,” “surgical intensive care,” “neurosurgical intensive care,” “pediatric intensive care,” or “neonatal intensive care.”) The experience may include hospital and emergency department consultations. Students engage with patients to collect data, perform physical examinations, and work with their attending physician to reason through differential diagnoses and generate a plan for management of patients requiring intensive care due to need for oxygenation, ventilation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, arterial monitoring, multiple intravenous infusions, intravascular infusions requiring titration, continuous renal replacement therapy, and other highly-skilled interventions. Credit: 4 hours. Prerequisite: CLIN 7401 or CLIN 7402 .
