Catalog description

Students are introduced to the materials, techniques, and concepts of oil painting. Emphasis is placed on painting from observation, the depiction light and shadow, and basic color theory. Process based painting and concept-based abstraction are explored. Students learn to recognize and use the tools and materials and nomenclature related to oil painting including supports and grounds, mediums, binders, and brushes. The role of painting in art history and in contemporary art is examined. Prerequisite: ARTS 1313 , ARTS 1314 , ARTS 1315 , ARTS 1316 .
