Spanish Sociolinguistics

Catalog description

Sociolinguistics examines the mutual interplay between language and society; that is, how society affects language use, and language in turn affects society. This course aims to develop students' abilities to notice, investigate, and interpret sociolinguistic phenomena in the world around them. Topics include dialect variation, bilingualism and Spanish in the U.S., language attitudes, and linguistic discrimination. Students are expected to put into practice the concepts and methods studied in hands-on experimental activities and a final project.
